COLONY Update: September 2026

Hello, everyone!

Muir is back, and our little project has had such a STELLAR month, and I’ve got loads to tell! Let’s get into it!

COLONY’s Convention Extravaganza

We had an amazing opportunity to show off COLONY in an official capacity for our very first time at a convention at Tucson Comic-Con! We were graciously given a wonderful spot to show off our game in the middle of the gaming hall, and we were able to talk to so many cool people over the weekend! We ran around 15 games across the weekend, and it was super fun to see people pick up the mechanics so quickly. While we didn’t get enough returning folks from Friday to Saturday to establish a tournament bracket, Saturday still ended up being a major success, and we met loads of cool folks. I also want to give a big shoutout to Xander, Bash, and Jacen, who stuck around and played for hours on end on Sunday to the point where I didn’t even need to help them anymore, and they were just having a blast trying out all the different Champions and their Traits. They were so fun to hang with, that in place of giving a shirt to our tournament champion, I decided to get them some of our exclusive, unreleased shirts from our shop.

On Saturday, I was approached by one of the showrunners for RinCon (https://rincongames.com/), a major gaming convention held in Tucson on the first weekend in October, and was cordially invited to attend with our game! If you’re in Tucson on October 2nd through the 4th, and you’re into the gaming scene, please come through, support the con, and come check out COLONY in person!

Over the Comic-Con weekend, I met loads of other cool people too, like Oak of OakstaffGames, who was DMing for a neighboring table. On Saturday night, he ran a very fun collaborative improv roleplaying game, where some very fun shenanigans were had, and I invented a new species of crab (hatticus crabicus, distinguished by a strangely proportioned tophat that naturally spawns on top of their heads). On Sunday when he was done running his games at his table, he joined in for a game of COLONY and gave me some wonderful advice for moving forward with our project at future conventions and events! I also met Levi of Telarius Games (https://www.talariusgaming.com/), who’s been working on his very own RPG since the 90’s, called “Legends of Kralis,” which is a very cool looking d100 system set inside a neat science-fantasy setting! He also gave me some sage advice about how to approach releasing our game and some tips on our Even more, I met Tork, one of the proprietors of Arcane Collector (https://arcanecollector.com/), which is an online procedural generation tool for making D&D dungeon maps very specifically without the use of generative AI. We had a lovely time talking and he gifted me a few prints of his maps, one of which has a very cool spider nest on it! I was so sad that by the time he came over to talk I had no more posters left to give him, but we exchanged information to talk more about our projects later, as I did with all these lovely folk.

We also got to see our friends from TitanCraft (https://titancraft.com/) just a couple booths away from us, and we got to talk shop about all our fun new projects and connections. They have a very cool Steam app they’ve got going right now called Basecoat (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/titancraft/basecoat-miniature-painting-studio/description?category_id=Q2F0ZWdvcnktMzk5&ref=section-games-projectcollection-13-discovery), which is a painting program for virtual tabletop minis! They ran a Kickstarter for it recently, and I highly recommend giving it a look! Not only have they been working on virtual painting, but they were also showing off one of their other buddy’s products: a new line of high contrast paints from 3DRS (https://3drs.com/products/3drs-instanteffect%E2%84%A2-one-coat-color-and-shade), formulated for tabletop miniatures! I got my hands on all the colors they had available, and it looks like they’ve got more colors on the way soon, so if you’re into model painting and are looking for a new brand to try out, I would recommend giving their stuff a go, and keep an eye out for their next color drop!

And there were even more amazing folks I got to meet over the weekend, though too many to talk about them all in this newsletter. All in all, Tucson Comic-Con was a great opportunity for us to link up with old friends and meet new ones, and I cannot wait for RinCon so I can meet up with some of them again! Once again, if you’re in Tucson between October 2nd and 4th, come on down to Casino Del Sol, purchase a day pass for RinCon, and play a game with me and take home a poster!!

State of the Game

As you all hopefully know by now, we have released the newest demo for Song of the Sekuta, this time with mechanics for Adventure Format, our role-playing mode for the game. For those who have downloaded it and have gotten the chance to play it, we hope you are all enjoying it, and please make sure to fill out our feedback form to let us know where you think we might be able to improve: https://forms.gle/STHbx2W6v3NX5W2u9

Song of Origins

This month, we were able to clear out some of the last of the art for Movement 7! Matt will be working on one of the remaining pieces, while Charles moves on to start tackling Movement 8. We’re thrilled to be at this point, and look forward to bringing you more news on our progress over the next few months.

And with that, we are out! By the time you’re reading this, I’m driving down to Tucson! Hope to see y’all there! Once again, we hope you try out our latest demo at https://www.hex.studio/play, and we hope you have a safe and creative month ahead of and behind you!

Cheers,

Isaac Muir

"To each, their own voice, their own hand. To each, their own word, their own mark, their own note. To each, their own vision, their own passion, their own love. To each, a stage, a podium, a wall, on which they graciously display a piece of themselves. For what is art that sits in the dark, unheard, unseen, unread, but an eagle in a cage?"
